The Yoruba Global One Thousand (YG1K) expresses profound disappointment and unequivocal condemnation of the recent remarks by African Union Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who publicly denied the ongoing genocide and systematic violence being perpetrated against ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
Dr. Patrick O. Akinbola, President of YG1K, described the statement as “a brazen insult to our collective intelligence as Africans, and a direct affront to the lived experiences of millions who continue to face displacement, targeted killings, and state-enabled repression.”
“For an African Union Chair to dismiss these atrocities—not only in Nigeria but across the wider region—undermines the very principles of justice, truth, and continental solidarity the AU claims to uphold,” Dr. Akinbola added.
A Global Community of Over 60 Million Yoruba Rejects the AU Chair’s Position
YG1K, representing a diaspora and homeland population of over 60 million Yoruba people worldwide, asserts that Mr. Youssouf’s statement does not reflect the will, experience, or voice of the peoples most affected by these crises.
The organization further notes that attempts to downplay or erase the severity of violence amount to moral negligence and risk emboldening perpetrators.
Call to the United Nations Secretary-General
In response, YG1K has formally notified UN Secretary-General António Guterres, expressing a loss of confidence in AU Chair Youssouf’s capacity to speak credibly on matters concerning Nigeria and West African stability.
YG1K emphasized the urgent need for:
An independent, UN-mediated investigation into mass atrocities in Nigeria.
Protection frameworks for vulnerable ethnic nationalities.
International recognition of the right to self-determination, particularly for regions seeking GMO/TB/SAMOA-free governance structures.
A Turning Point for Indigenous Sovereignty Movements
“This moment reinforces why indigenous nationalities can no longer entrust their survival to regional bodies compromised by political allegiances,” Dr. Akinbola stated.
“We are accelerating our roadmap toward a lawful, independent, GMO/TB/SAMOA-free nation. Our jailbreak will not wait.”
YG1K reiterates its commitment to peaceful, lawful pursuit of sovereignty, decolonization of governance structures, and global partnerships that protect fundamental human rights.
